BIO

Rebecca Lowell arrived on Maui nearly two decades ago, from her home in rural northern California. Not long after, with just $78 left,  she  checked into the Bungalow, an $11-a-night hostel in Wailuku, Maui's county seat — and started to paint.

After a week she had enough paintings and hitchhiked across the island to Lahaina's weekly art fair.

Today, after years of success in galleries across Maui, she has her own gallery — Rebecca Lowell Fine Art — on the beach walk at Ka'anapali Bay between Whaler's Shopping Center and the Sheraton. There, she paints and offers her original paintings, giclees, prints and photographs — wide-ranging work from elegant giclees of candlelit plumeria and oils of world-renowned Pu'u keka'a   ("Black Rock") on Ka'anapali Beach to popular abstracts featuring words and wisdom from around the world.

She's especially proud of her partnerships with four Maui landmarks — The Ka'anapali Beach Hotel (known as "Hawaii's most Hawaiian resort"), historic Kula Hospital in upcountry (designed in the Thirties by famed Hawaiian architect Charles W. Dickey) and the Maui Tropical Plantation. The beauty and variety of the plantation's grounds have inspired Lowell's best art since she first came to Maui. And the Maui Ocean Center, where she was the guest artist on their opening day.

More than anything, however, she believes in following her heart and trusting her intuition.  She studied photography in Germany, calligraphy and design in California and art in Hawaii. Before pursuing art full time she raised two children, Steve and Ann, and  grew  a small design and fashion business that eventually produced hand-painted clothing for Nordstroms and Hawaii's Crazy Shirts.
